Guildford Attractions

Guildford is only thirty minutes by rail from London and just a short drive from the M25 but it has maintained its individual character, its rural villages, riverside walks, gardens and historic buildings.

Yet the town provides an excellent range of shops, in a delightful setting, which are the envy of the region.
When you are planning your visit to the Guildford area the Tourist Information Center for help and advice. They provide a range of leaflets about the Guildford, help with journey planning, accommodation booking, arrange guided walks and give full details on all that the area has to offer.

Guildford Cathedral - Set high up on Stag Hill Guildford Cathedral can be clearly seen from the surrounding area providing Guildford with a magnificent landmark. The Cathedral was consecrated in 1961 and boasts Somerset sandstone pillars and white Italian marble floors in clean minimalist style. Areas of particular interest include the colourful circular stained glass window and the Lady Chapel area reserved for quiet prayer.

Guildford Castle started out as a Norman motte and bailey castle, built soon after 1066. The wooden defences were replaced by stone ones during the 12th century, and the motte acquired first a shell keep and then the strong but not very large tower keep that survives today. As the only royal castle in Surrey it became the centre for administration and justice, with the keep converted to use as the county gaol. The royal apartments were moved to a palace in the bailey below, which under Henry III became one of the most luxurious royal residences in England.

After Henry III's death in 1272 the castle fell into decline, and the palace buildings were allowed to fall into ruin. In 1611 the castle was bought by a Guildford merchant, Francis Carter, who attempted to convert the keep into a private residence. This proved unsuccessful, and in 1630 the roof and floors were removed. In 1885 the ruins were bought by Guildford Borough Council who turned the castle into a park.

Loseley Park is a 16th century house built under the orders of Queen Elizabeth I and has been home to the More-Molyneux family for over 400 years. As many visitors come here to see the house as they do to experience the gardens, including a stunning walled garden surrounded by spacious parkland. It is in this parkland that the herd of Jersey cows are kept, whose milk is used to product the famous Loseley ice cream on sale in the gift shop and the tearoom. The ruins of Guildford Castle can be seen to the south of the High Street. Today all that remains of the castle built for William The Conqueror is the 12th century Keep. Today it is surrounded by picturesque gardens and admission is free. For a leisurely afternoon on the water take a trip along the River Wey on board the ‘Harry Stevens.’ Cruises start out from the Guildford Boat House and are accompanied by a chatty commentary detailing points of interest en route, including wildlife and local history.
